Culture of Quality and Safety
As a leader, I work to create an environment that promotes safe, quality care.
My goal to is to continue to learn through our experiences as an organization
to continue to improve care practices. Pursuing a safe culture promotes
critical thinking, collaboration, and problem solving skills to minimize risk.
I have created a presentation for leaders in my organization on methodologies
to promote safe care practices throughout the organization. This presentation
addresses investigation, coaching, and documentation. I have found a passion in
working on patient safety inititiaves. I enjoy leading others in reviewing
cases for futher learning, and working through system issues to promote
changes in practice that promote safer and higher quality care.
The presentation is found below.

Transformational Leadership
Professional Organizations
AWHONN
Belonging to professional organizations has allowed me
to advance my leadership skills. As a member of the Association of Women’s
Health Obstetrics and Neonatal Nursing (AWHONN) not only do I resource
journals and evidence based practice guidelines each month, but I have also
become a leader in my region. As a chapter leader I have reopened the Genesee,
Lapeer, and Shiawassee (GLS) chapter of AWHONN. As the chair I am
responsible to bring educational information and meetings to the nurses in
our area throughout he year. Also, as a participating member of the
AWHONN Section Leadership Team (SLT) I participate with the planning
of the state conference that is held each year in Frankenmuth, MI.
MNNP
Another professional organization that I participate in is Maternal Newborn Nurse
Professionals (MNNP). Participation in this organization provides me with the
opportunity to network with peers from around the state of Michigan.
This professional organization builds and shares best practices from around the state.
COMON
As a member of the State LeadershipTeam team I represent AWHONN at the Coalition of
Michigan Organization of Nurses (COMON). Participating in this group provides
interaction with multiple other nursing organizations around the state. In
addition it allows support of current legislature that directly affects nursing.
MARCH OF DIMES
Working in a minitsry of Ascension, we have partnered with the March of Dimes
to provide educational materials to women on promoting full term delivieries.
Also, as a volunteer for the March of Dimes, I work on the committee for the
Chef's Auction. This is an event held locally to promote local chefs in the area while
raising money for the cause of preventing pre-term deliveries.

Special Projects
I have been the OB keystone coordinator for my organization, and in
doing so, I have developed work groups with physicians, residents and nurses to
work through necessary process changes. Leading my organization
through the OB Keystone project has been a role where I have needed to have
extensive knowledge of the keystone initiatives as outlined by the Michigan
Hospital Association (MHA). This project has given me experience in quality
review and data collection. The keystone projects require a large amount of data
collection, analysis and reporting. By collecting this data I have been able to
inform my staff and physician groups how we compare to other organizations. The
data collection and research involved in this project demonstrates my
competencies in the standards of professional performance including quality of
practice, research and evaluation of professional practice. The
keystone initiatives require a large amount of chart review including review of
the processes and outcomes of the delivery process. These evaluations
review outcomes of the entire labor and birth process, from both medical
and nursing perspectives. As a nursing leader in my organization I have led
the initiative to reduce early elective deliveries prior to 39 weeks. You will find a
summary of the data below.

Mentoring through Teaching
I was honored to provide leadership to nursing students in their final semester
of their BSN program, I am able to use my past experiences
and those that I have learned about being a leader in my course work to guide
them to successful practices. As the instructor for this group I provide them
with many experiences in the different areas of nursing leadership within the
hospital setting. I introduce them to many ancillary nursing departments that
can provide great resources to our staff nurses working on various units. I
think that in teaching the key behaviors of leaders and exposing the students to
other areas of the hospital this will give them an advantage in their knowledge
away from the bedside. These students are more prepared when starting their
nursing career by knowing what resources are available to them. These students
have a better understanding of promoting a successful work environment for nurses.
During this clinical we also discuss how to create a good resume and how to
prepare for an interview. I make a great attempt at assisting my students to
be strong successful nurses.
As a leader in my organization I have initiated debrief huddles following serious
patient events. In leading the debriefs for our area we have created a tool to use
as a guide for review, documentation, and overall evaluation of team performance.
Using this tool will allow for process improvement initiatives to allow us to continue to
advance as a department and as an organization.
