I have Basic Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation and STABLE
certifications. In obtaining these certifications I have learned a great deal
of knowledge about the care of the antepartum, peripartum and post partum
patient and how to care for the newborn immediately post delivery. These
certifications demonstrate my competencies for the nursing standards of
practice including assessment, identifying problems, planning, implementation,
evaluation and outcome identification. Maintaining these certifications
qualifies me to lead my staff by role modeling a committment to professional
deveolopment and life longlearning. Since I have transitioned from the
staff nurse role to the manager role I have continued to use this
knowledge to mentor and support my staff. I have assisted in the orientation
process teaching the new employees with the Perinatal Orientation Education

Fiscal Management and Financial Outcomes
As a unit manager, I am responsible for the financial opperations of the unit. I use
actual cases and experiences to lead staff in maintaing the financial viability of the unit.
As a leader, I was asked to evaluate our processes for cost saving oppotunities and
present this to the executive team. Below is a presentation that demonstrates

Commitment to Excellence
I have the ability to work well with others and
form multidisciplinary relationships. This is demonstrated by my
relationships with physicians, senior leaders, peers and my staff. I learn
quickly and can absorb information readily. Working well with all of these
groups allows me to function well as a leader. These abilities are also
demonstrated by my organization and leadership skills. Being a good leader
to my staff means to me that I need to adhere to the nursing standards of
practice.
I have been working directly wth physician leaders to develop an interdisciplinary
team to promote positive process changes to improve patient care. I initiated and led
an interdisciplinary committee to promote process improvements for quality and safety
initiatives. This committee was started as a method to engage physicians and nursing
staff in making a differencein our everyday practice. This committee is
now called the OB Quality Oversight Comittee. I work directly with the
OB department chair. As a result of this committee we have
established a number of new policies and implemented
simulation drills on OB unit. Through the collaboration of this committe to create and
implement quality initiatives, our department has eliminated early elective deliveries prior
to 39 weeks.

and ideas. I have used Dale Carnegie’s principles in trying to understand
others and improve my communication skills with those where it has opportunity
for improvement. I am very transparent and I am honest. I strive to create an
environment where open communication is possible and respected. I strongly
believe that communication is a necessary factor in creating a strong team environment.
I have presented the concept of using the SBAR tool in leadership as well. First, the SBAR
as a leader allows for focused communication that remains objective during employee
coaching. Next, the SBAR gives the manager time to put thought into and plan for
a discussion with an employee, as well as clearly identify expectations and recommendations
for future performance for employees. Finally, SBAR can be used to clearly document a
conversation and coaching for an employee, and be placed in the employee file. Below is
a copy of the poster presentation along with the research that was used to guide the practice
change.
