Personal Information and Goal Statement
I have been a Registered Nurse for twelve years. I started my registered nursing career in the Neuro-Trauma Intensive Care Unit (NTICU) at Genesys Regional Medical Center. For six years I worked in the NTICU growing and developing as a professional nurse, expanding my knowledge and skills. My time working in critical care awarded me many great experiences in caring for the critically ill patient. These experiences also allowed me to establish good working relationships with peers and physicians.
The next step of my career was working as a labor and delivery nurse, I did this for four years. Working in labor and delivery provided an excellet opportunity to build on my skills of collaboration. In working in this area I was able to join a strong team of nurses and physicians. Obstetrics is a speciality where nursing works closely with physicians to manage a patients labor progress. I have a strong skill set in the labor and delivery setting, including caring for the laboring patient, triaging patients, and caring for the patient in the surgical suite as well as in the post anesthesia care area. My work in Obstetrics has allowed me to learn about the intricate processes of the mother and child. While working in this area, I became a member of the Association of Women's Health, Obstetrics and Neonatal Nursing to provide me the opportunity to further my knowledge stay current with evidence based practices.
The next stage of my career has led me into management. For a year and a half, I worked as an off shift manager on second shift. This position was known as the shift manager. In the shift manager position, I had oversight of four departments, including Labor & Delivery, Post-Partum, Special Care Nursery, and Pediatrics. Some of the key responsibilities included providing leadership and guidance with staff nurses and physicians, as well as ensuring positive patient experience through rounding.
During my role of Unit Manager for the Labor and Delivery Unit, I developed a deep appreciation for the value of an engaged leader. I now have more focus on patient safety and staff satisfaction. I have participated in many projects such as: staffing initiatives, onboarding new managers, promoting error prevention techniques, reducing hospital aquired conditions, increasing HCAHPS scores, and improving care practices in Labor and Delivery.
These critical leadership roles have provided me the opportunity to reflect on my perspectives of nursing, develop my own beliefs and form my own goals of what I would like to see and where I want to lead others in the nursing profession. I want to improve communication between employees, departments and physicians. Improving communication will improve working relationships, and ultimately improve the quality of care for patients. I would like to see my staff work together as a team to provide exceptional care for our patients. With these goals I have developed a project plan for improving patient safety.
5 Year Goal
Upon completion of Master's Degree in Nursing, with a concentration of Nursing Administration, I would like to seek a position as a Director of Nursing. The knowledge and skills that I have gained with this advanced degree and leadership experiences will allow me to lead my peers in advancing nursing practice. I enjoy project plans and advancing the skill level of my staff. In five years I would like to see how my completed project plans for women's the children's center have advanced the level of nursing practice at Genesys.
10 Year Goal
I am excited to see where my journey will take me. I believe in lifelong learning and will be looking for opportunities to continue to grow and develop as a nurse leader. I would like to gain extensive knowledge in my leadership roles and continue my education to provide me with the experience to assist others in becoming great leaders in nursing as well.
